Does anyone have tried and tested methods of keeping these slimy beasts at bay?

Re:
Other than slug pellets I assume ...
I use fleece and that works pretty well. The slugs don't seem to be able to cross it but the birds have a habit of knicking it in the spring time for nesting materials. I get tons of fleece, it's used as an environmentally friendly insulator by some shipping companies. I'll leave some in the container next time I'm up.
